Advocacy and Awareness
The dedicated advocacy and awareness group at Umang plans
and implements number of projects to meet the goal of
improving the lives of individuals with disabilities and
their families.
The issues of focus are access, employment and
implementation of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Act. It
also works towards creating awareness and changing public
perception. Burning issues, especially, concerning the
rights of the persons with disabilities are addressed
through advocacy programs aimed at various groups such as
policy makers, professionals, mainstream educational
institutions, community and other stake holders.
To strongly advocate on the issues of disability it has
forged partnerships, associations and established networks
with several national and international organizations. The
group was also instrumental in forming an active advocacy
group of the largest registered Parents (of persons with
disabilities) body in Rajasthan.
The group undertakes projects on legislative advocacy,
advocacy through media and other means of communication.
Awareness is spread through word of mouth, campaigns,
media, and through participation in meetings, seminars and
conferences. Regularly, students and staff from the
mainstream educational establishments, officers from the
government departments and other organizations are invited
to visit and spend time at Umang.
In addition to this, students of Umang conduct street
shows as well as present in radio and television programs
to highlight the issues related to disability. These
efforts often receive extensive media coverage.
